Assistant Store Manager job description template

An assistant store manager runs shifts, opens and closes, supervises staff and steps in for the store manager when they’re off. In a small store, it’s a hands-on role that mixes selling and stocking with leadership. A good post makes clear which decisions they can make alone and how the role could lead to running the store.

Assistant Store Manager

Full-time
Your Company is hiring an assistant store manager to help lead our team and keep the store running smoothly. You’ll supervise shifts, open and close, help train new staff and cover for the store manager when they’re out. You’ll still spend plenty of time on the floor helping customers. If you have some retail leadership experience and want to grow into running a store, this role is built for that.

  • Supervise shifts, assign tasks and make sure breaks and coverage are handled
  • Open and close the store, including counting registers and preparing deposits
  • Train new hires on customer service, the register and store procedures
  • Step in for the store manager on scheduling, ordering and staff questions when they’re away
  • Help customers on the sales floor and handle escalated questions or complaints
  • Check in shipments and keep stock levels and displays up to standard
  • Report staffing, sales and maintenance issues to the store manager

What we’re looking for

  • At least one year of retail experience, with some time as a keyholder, lead or supervisor
  • Comfortable giving direction to coworkers in a respectful way
  • Trustworthy with cash, keys and alarm codes
  • Available for opening, closing and weekend shifts
  • Able to stay on your feet and lift up to 30 lbs when helping with stock

Nice to have

  • Experience building staff schedules or using scheduling apps
  • Familiarity with inventory counts and ordering
  • Interest in becoming a store manager

Schedule

Full-time, with a mix of opening, closing and weekend shifts. Your schedule is usually posted a couple of weeks ahead.

What we offer

  • Paid vacation and sick time
  • Discount on all store merchandise
  • Leadership training with a path to store manager
  • Quarterly bonus based on store performance

Add your pay, location and schedule when you post. Jobs that show pay get noticeably more applicants.

Tips for hiring an assistant store manager

  • Look inside first. A reliable keyholder or senior associate who already knows your customers can be a strong pick.
  • Have finalists shadow your store manager for part of a shift and watch how they interact with staff.
  • If there’s a real path to store manager, describe it in the post. It attracts candidates who plan to stay.
  • Verify supervisory experience with a reference call, because titles like lead or supervisor mean different things at different stores.
