Barber job description template

Barbers handle the fades, tapers, lineups and shaves that keep regulars coming back every few weeks. Many small shops work with barbers on a chair-rental or commission basis, so the best barber posts are upfront about the arrangement, your walk-in traffic, and what the shop provides versus what barbers bring.

Barber

Contract
Your Company is looking for a skilled, licensed barber to take a chair in our shop. You'll serve a mix of regulars and walk-ins, delivering clean fades, tapers, beard work and classic cuts with consistent quality. We bring the location, steady foot traffic and a welcoming atmosphere; you bring sharp skills and good conversation. Barbers with their own following are welcome, and we'll help newer barbers get busy fast.

What you’ll do

  • Deliver fades, tapers, clipper and scissor cuts, lineups and beard trims to a high standard
  • Perform hot-towel straight-razor shaves and neck cleanups safely
  • Talk with each client about the look they want and suggest styles that suit their hair
  • Disinfect clippers, razors, combs and capes between every client as our state board requires
  • Keep your station clean and stocked, and help keep the shop floor swept
  • Manage your appointments in our booking app while serving walk-ins promptly
  • Build your clientele through great cuts, rebooking and posting your work online

What we’re looking for

  • Current barber license in our state
  • Confident with fades, tapers and lineups on a wide range of hair textures
  • Your own professional clippers, trimmers, shears and razors in good condition
  • Friendly and professional with clients, and respectful of the other barbers in the shop
  • Consistent about working the days and hours you commit to

Nice to have

  • An established clientele who will follow you to our shop
  • Skill with hair designs, hard parts and freestyle work
  • Experience with barber booking apps such as Booksy or Squire

Schedule

Set your own days and hours within shop hours, which run six days a week including Saturdays. Evenings and weekends are when demand is highest.

What we offer

  • Keep every tip you earn
  • Steady walk-in traffic to help you build your book
  • Freedom to set your own days and hours
  • Shop covers towels, capes, disinfectant and the booking app
  • Shop marketing and online booking that send new clients your way

Add your pay, location and schedule when you post. Jobs that show pay get noticeably more applicants.

Barber interview questions

  1. Talk me through how you do a skin fade, from guard selection to blending.
  2. A walk-in shows you a photo of a cut you've never done. How do you handle it?
  3. How do you keep regulars coming back every few weeks?
  4. What's your process for cleaning and disinfecting your tools between clients?
  5. A client says the cut isn't what they asked for. What do you do?
  6. Which days and hours do you plan to work, and how quickly do you expect to fill them?
  7. Would you prefer chair rental or commission, and why?

Tips for hiring a barber

  • Ask every candidate to do a live cut in your shop. Watching someone blend a fade tells you more than any Instagram post.
  • Look up the barber license on your state board's website before they start taking clients.
  • Put the arrangement in writing: chair rental or commission, who supplies products, and how bookings and tips are handled.
  • If barbers work as contractors, they should control their own schedules and services. Ask your accountant whether your setup qualifies.
