Sales Representative job description template

A sales representative finds new customers, follows up on leads and turns conversations into closed deals. Small businesses get better applicants when the post explains what you sell, who buys it, how leads come in and how pay works, including base pay and any commission. Be honest about how much cold outreach is involved.

Sales Representative

Full-time
Your Company is looking for a motivated sales representative to grow our customer base. You'll follow up on leads, reach out to new prospects, explain how our products and services solve real problems and close deals. You'll keep our CRM up to date and work closely with the team to make sure new customers are happy. If you're persistent, personable and like hitting goals, let's talk.

What you’ll do

  • Find new customers through calls, emails, visits and local networking events
  • Learn our products and services well enough to answer detailed questions
  • Give demos, prepare quotes and negotiate terms within approved guidelines
  • Record calls, notes and deal stages in our CRM every day
  • Meet monthly sales goals and report on your pipeline each week
  • Stay in touch with existing customers to win repeat business and referrals
  • Introduce new customers to the team that delivers the work

What we’re looking for

  • Previous sales experience, B2B or B2C, with results you can describe
  • Confident, clear communication by phone, email and in person
  • Persistence and a positive attitude when prospects say no
  • Organized enough to manage a pipeline and follow up consistently
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation if the role includes field visits

Nice to have

  • Experience with a CRM such as HubSpot, Salesforce or Pipedrive
  • Existing contacts or experience selling in our industry
  • Experience with consultative selling to business owners

Schedule

Full-time, Monday through Friday during business hours, with occasional evenings for client meetings or local events.

What we offer

  • Commission on every sale you close, on top of base pay
  • Mileage reimbursement for client visits
  • Ongoing sales training and coaching
  • Paid holidays and vacation days

Add your pay, location and schedule when you post. Jobs that show pay get noticeably more applicants.

Sales Representative interview questions

  1. Pick something you've sold before and pitch it to me as if I were a new customer.
  2. How do you research a prospect before your first call?
  3. Walk me through how you follow up with a lead who stopped responding.
  4. A customer says your price is too high. How do you respond?
  5. How do you organize your pipeline and decide who to contact each day?
  6. Tell me about a sale you lost. What did you learn from it?
  7. What kind of pay structure motivates you most, and why?

Tips for hiring a sales representative

  • Spell out how pay works in the post, including base pay and how commission is calculated. Vague pay plans drive strong sellers away.
  • Run a short role-play in the interview, with you playing a skeptical customer.
  • Ask candidates for specific results from past roles, then confirm them with a former manager.
  • Plan a ramp-up period with clear goals for the first few months. New reps need time to learn your products and build a pipeline.
