Childcare Center Director job description template

A childcare center director runs the whole program: keeping the center in line with licensing rules, hiring and scheduling staff, managing enrollment and tuition, and being the person parents trust. A good post names your licensed capacity and classrooms, from infants to pre-K, whether the director also covers classrooms, and the qualifications your state requires for the role.

Childcare Center Director

Full-time
Your Company is looking for an experienced childcare center director to lead our center day to day. You'll keep us inspection-ready, build and support a strong teaching team, manage enrollment and budgets, and make sure every parent feels welcome and informed. You'll have a real say in how the center runs, with an owner who backs your decisions. If you love early childhood education and enjoy leading people, we'd like to talk.

What you’ll do

  • Keep the center in compliance with state licensing rules and lead staff through inspections and renewals
  • Recruit, interview and onboard teachers and assistants, keeping staff files and training records complete
  • Build the staff schedule so every classroom stays in ratio from opening to closing, including breaks
  • Give tours to prospective parents, manage enrollment and the waitlist, and fill openings quickly
  • Bill tuition, follow up on late payments and handle subsidy paperwork for the programs we accept
  • Prepare the budget with the owner and track spending on payroll, food, supplies and repairs
  • Observe classrooms regularly, coach teachers and help them plan developmentally appropriate curriculum
  • Handle parent concerns, incident reports and emergencies calmly, and document them as required

What we’re looking for

  • Education, experience and director qualifications as required by our state's licensing rules
  • Experience in early childhood education, including time supervising or leading staff
  • Able to pass the background check and fingerprinting required by our state's licensing rules
  • Current Pediatric CPR and First Aid certification, or able to complete it before you start
  • Comfortable with budgets, tuition billing and childcare management software
  • Clear, steady communication with staff, parents and licensing staff, especially in tough conversations

Nice to have

  • A state director credential, where our state offers one
  • Bachelor's degree in early childhood education, child development or a related field
  • Experience with your state's quality rating program (QRIS) or NAEYC accreditation
  • Experience with childcare software such as Brightwheel, Procare or Kangarootime

Schedule

Full-time, Monday through Friday, with hours that overlap opening or closing so you see staff and parents at both ends of the day. Occasional evenings for parent events and staff training.

What we offer

  • Paid vacation and sick time, plus paid holidays when the center is closed
  • Health insurance for full-time staff
  • Childcare tuition discount at our center
  • Paid professional development, including director credential courses and conferences

Add your pay, location and schedule when you post. Jobs that show pay get noticeably more applicants.

Tips for hiring a childcare center director

  • Look up your state's licensing rules for director qualifications before you post, and list them so applicants can tell right away whether they qualify.
  • Ask finalists to walk you through a past inspection report and how they corrected any citations. It shows how they handle compliance under pressure.
  • Have finalists meet your lead teachers and ask for their impressions afterward, since the director's relationship with staff shapes who stays.
  • Call references from past owners or boards, and make sure the background check and fingerprinting your state requires are cleared before the director's first day.
