Diesel Mechanic job description template
Diesel mechanics diagnose and repair heavy trucks, buses and equipment, from engines and aftertreatment systems to air brakes, electrical and hydraulics. In a small shop or fleet they also handle preventive maintenance and DOT inspections. A good post says what you work on, such as on-highway trucks or construction equipment, whether techs supply their own tools and whether road calls are part of the job.

Tips for hiring a diesel mechanic
- Give finalists a paid working interview on a real diagnostic job. Watching them work through your software tells you more than any resume.
- Check whether candidates qualify to perform annual DOT inspections. FMCSA rules require inspectors to have specific training or experience.
- Diesel technology programs at community colleges and technical schools are a steady source of new techs, and some students want paid internships.
- Spell out tool expectations, road call frequency and how techs are paid in the post. Experienced diesel techs compare these details closely.
