  4. How do you build a clientele, and what do you do to get clients to rebook?
  5. Which hair types and textures are you most and least confident with?

Tips for hiring a hair stylist

  • Ask each finalist to do a paid practical: a cut and blowout on a model in your salon. Watch the consultation as closely as the haircut.
  • Verify the cosmetology license through your state board's online lookup before the stylist's first day.
  • Say in the post whether you pay commission, hourly or offer booth rental. Stylists compare pay structures before anything else.
  • Browse local stylists' Instagram portfolios and let nearby cosmetology schools know you're hiring.
