Plumber's Helper job description template

A plumber's helper assists licensed plumbers on service calls, remodels and new construction: carrying tools and materials, digging, cutting and prepping pipe, and cleaning up the job. It's an entry-level role and a common first step toward a plumbing apprenticeship. A good post says what kind of plumbing work you do and whether you'll help with apprenticeship registration and schooling.

Plumber's Helper

Full-time
Your Company is looking for a plumber's helper to assist our licensed plumbers on service calls and installs. You'll carry materials, cut and prep pipe, dig, demo and clean up, and learn the trade from experienced plumbers as you go. No experience is needed if you're dependable, hardworking and not afraid to get dirty. Helpers who show up and learn can move into an apprenticeship with us.

What you’ll do

  • Carry tools, pipe, fittings and water heaters between the truck and the job
  • Cut, ream and prep copper, PEX and PVC pipe for the plumber to install
  • Dig trenches for water and sewer lines, and backfill once the work passes inspection
  • Help remove old fixtures, water heaters and piping, and haul away debris
  • Lay drop cloths and protect floors and finishes in customers' homes
  • Pick up parts from the supply house and keep the truck stocked and organized
  • Hold, measure and steady materials, and learn to make basic connections under supervision
  • Follow safety rules for trenches, ladders, power tools and confined spaces

What we’re looking for

  • Valid driver's license
  • Able to lift up to 75 lbs, kneel, crawl and work in tight, dirty spaces
  • On time every day and ready to work
  • Willing to learn and take direction from experienced plumbers
  • Comfortable with basic hand tools

Nice to have

  • Construction, maintenance or other trade experience
  • Interest in a plumbing apprenticeship and license
  • Your own basic hand tools

Schedule

Full-time, weekdays with early starts. Some evenings or Saturdays when a job has to be finished or an emergency call comes in.

What we offer

  • Paid on-the-job training from licensed plumbers
  • A path into a plumbing apprenticeship
  • Work boots and safety gear provided
  • Health insurance and paid time off

Add your pay, location and schedule when you post. Jobs that show pay get noticeably more applicants.

Tips for hiring a plumber's helper

  • Hire for reliability first. A plumber can't start the day's jobs if the helper doesn't show up, so ask references about attendance.
  • Check your state's rules on what helpers may do. In some states, anyone doing plumbing work must be registered as an apprentice.
  • Bring finalists on a paid ride-along day. You'll see whether they're comfortable in crawl spaces and how they treat customers' homes.
  • Many good helpers come from landscaping, construction and warehouse jobs. Post at your local workforce center and in veteran job programs as well as on job boards.
