Tips for hiring a carpenter
- Ask candidates to bring photos of past work, or to cut and install a short run of trim as a paid skills test.
- Be clear about whether you need a framer, a finish carpenter or someone who does both. They're different skill sets and attract different candidates.
- Check with trade schools, community colleges and NCCER or carpenter apprenticeship programs for helpers you can train up.
- Call references from the contractors or homeowners they've worked for, and ask about quality and whether they showed up every day.
