Tips for hiring a plumber
- Verify the license with your state plumbing board. In some areas plumbers are licensed by the city or county, so check with the right office.
- Do a paid ride-along on a real service call. You'll see how the candidate diagnoses a problem and how they talk to customers.
- Recruit through plumbing apprenticeship programs, community college trade courses and your supply house. Counter staff often know which plumbers are looking.
- Spell out on-call expectations and whether the truck goes home. Experienced plumbers weigh these details as heavily as pay.
