- What safety checks do you perform on a gas furnace before you leave a job?
- How do you explain an expensive repair to a customer who's on a tight budget?

Tips for hiring an HVAC technician
- Ask to see the EPA 608 card and check which type it covers. Universal certification lets a tech work on every class of equipment.
- Give finalists a paid bench test: a unit with a planted fault, like a failed capacitor, shows how they troubleshoot under real conditions.
- Hire before peak season. Once the first heat wave or cold snap hits, experienced techs are busy and harder to reach.
- Community college HVAC programs and trade schools are a steady source of entry-level techs you can train your way.
