Store Manager job description template

A store manager runs the day-to-day business: hiring and scheduling staff, keeping inventory in check, hitting sales goals and making sure customers have a good experience. At a small business, this person is often the owner’s right hand. The best posts describe the store’s size, how many people they’ll lead and how much say they’ll have over ordering and hiring.

Store Manager

Full-time
Your Company is looking for an experienced store manager to lead our team and run the store day to day. You’ll hire, train and schedule staff, manage inventory and ordering, keep an eye on sales and expenses, and set the tone for how customers are treated. You’ll work closely with ownership and have a real voice in how the store grows. If you’re organized, steady under pressure and enjoy developing people, let’s talk.

What you’ll do

  • Hire, train, schedule and coach a team of sales associates and keyholders
  • Track daily sales, labor costs and expenses, and report results to ownership
  • Order merchandise, manage stock levels and work with vendors on deliveries and returns
  • Oversee opening and closing, bank deposits and register reconciliation
  • Set standards for customer service, cleanliness and displays, and lead by example
  • Resolve customer complaints and make judgment calls on refunds and exceptions
  • Plan promotions and seasonal changes with the owner to reach sales goals
  • Enforce safety, security and cash-handling procedures

What we’re looking for

  • Two or more years of retail experience, including time supervising staff
  • Comfortable reading sales reports and working within a budget
  • Clear communicator who can give feedback and handle tough conversations
  • Able to work a full-time schedule that includes weekends and some holidays
  • Organized enough to juggle staffing, ordering and customer needs in the same day

Nice to have

  • Experience with retail POS or inventory software such as Lightspeed, Shopify POS or Square
  • Background in buying or merchandising
  • Experience opening a new store or turning around a struggling one

Schedule

Full-time, including weekends and peak holiday periods. We’ll work out a schedule together that covers the store’s busiest days.

What we offer

  • Paid time off
  • Bonus tied to store sales and goals
  • Health insurance options
  • Manager-level store discount

Add your pay, location and schedule when you post. Jobs that show pay get noticeably more applicants.

Tips for hiring a store manager

  • Spell out how much authority the manager has over hiring, ordering and pricing. Experienced candidates ask about it right away.
  • Ask finalists to review a recent week of your sales and staff schedule and tell you what they’d change.
  • Check references with people who reported to the candidate, not just their former bosses.
  • Consider promoting an assistant manager or keyholder who already knows your store, and post publicly at the same time to compare.
