Welder job description template
Welders join, cut and repair metal for fabrication shops, contractors and repair businesses, working from drawings in the shop or out in the field. A good welder post names the processes you use (MIG, TIG, stick or flux-core), the metals involved, and whether candidates will take a weld test.

Welder interview questions
- What's the thinnest and thickest material you've welded, and with which process?
- How do you keep a long seam from distorting while you weld it?
- What causes porosity in a MIG weld, and how do you fix it?
- Walk me through how you'd build a part from a shop drawing.
- What safety steps do you take before hot work in the field?
- Tell me about a weld that failed inspection or a bend test. What did you change?
- How do you set up your machine when switching from thin sheet to heavy plate?
- Have you held any AWS or code certifications, and are they current?
Tips for hiring a welder
- Always run a paid weld test in the positions and processes you actually use. A bend test on a test plate tells you more than a résumé.
- If someone lists AWS certification, ask for the paperwork and proof of continuity. Certifications lapse if the welder hasn't kept them current.
- Recruit from community college welding programs, trade schools and AWS Accredited Test Facilities in your area.
- List the processes, metals and any field work in your post. Welding jobs vary widely, and specific posts attract the right applicants.
