Cashier job description template
Cashiers handle every sale, and for many shoppers they’re the only person they talk to on a visit. A good cashier is quick and accurate at the register, honest with cash and friendly even at the end of a long line. Strong cashier posts spell out your hours, your register system and whether you sell items that need an ID check.

Tips for hiring a cashier
- Give finalists a quick counting test: hand them a practice drawer and ask them to make change for a few purchases.
- Schedule conflicts are a common reason new cashiers don’t last, so confirm availability before you invest in training.
- Call at least one past employer and ask specifically about reliability and cash handling.
- Mention your register system and whether the role involves alcohol or tobacco sales, so applicants know what to expect.
