Janitor job description template
A janitor keeps your building clean, safe and presentable, usually working before opening or after closing when nobody else is around. Good janitor posts spell out the size and type of space, the hours, and whether the job includes floor care like stripping and waxing or just routine cleaning.

Janitor interview questions
- Walk me through how you'd clean a restroom from start to finish.
- Which cleaning chemicals have you worked with, and how do you use them safely?
- You find water leaking under a sink late at night. What do you do?
- How do you make sure nothing on your checklist gets skipped when you're working alone?
- Have you stripped and waxed floors or run a buffer? Tell me how you did it.
- What would you do if you arrived for your shift and the alarm code didn't work?
- How do you handle a night when you can't finish everything in the time you have?
Tips for hiring a janitor
- Walk candidates through your building during the interview and ask how they'd tackle it. Their questions show whether they've really done this work.
- Check references from past cleaning jobs, since this person will have keys and be alone in your space.
- Do a paid trial night and walk through the building together the next morning. A clean restroom and a properly mopped floor speak for themselves.
- List the approximate square footage or number of rooms in the post so applicants can judge whether the hours are realistic.
