Bike Mechanic job description template
Bike mechanics tune, repair and build bicycles, from flat fixes and brake adjustments to wheel truing, hydraulic brake bleeds and e-bike diagnostics. In a small shop they often check in repairs and help on the sales floor too. A strong post says what kinds of bikes you service most, whether mechanics bring their own tools and how busy spring and summer get.
Bike Mechanic
Full-timeYour Company is hiring a bike mechanic to keep our customers riding. You’ll tune, repair and build bikes in our service department, check in repairs and explain the work to customers, and help on the sales floor when it’s busy. We service everything from kids’ bikes and commuters to road, mountain and electric bikes. If you’re careful, efficient and enjoy solving mechanical problems, we’d like to meet you.
What you’ll do
- Perform tune-ups: adjust shifting and brakes, true wheels and check bearings and headsets
- Fix flats and replace tires, tubes, chains, cassettes, cables and brake pads
- Build new bikes out of the box and safety-check them before they go on the floor
- Check in repairs, write clear estimates and call customers before doing extra work
- Bleed hydraulic disc brakes, set up tubeless tires and do basic suspension service
- Diagnose e-bike battery, motor and display problems following the manufacturer’s procedures
- Fit and adjust bikes for customers, including saddle height and handlebar position
- Keep the workshop, stands and tools clean, organized and ready for the next job
What we’re looking for
- Hands-on experience repairing bikes at a shop, a community bike co-op or at home
- Mechanically careful: you torque bolts to spec and double-check your own work
- Able to explain repairs to customers in plain language
- Able to stand at a repair stand all day and lift bikes and boxes up to 50 lbs
- Available on weekends, our busiest days for service and sales
Nice to have
- Training from a bike mechanic school such as UBI or Barnett
- Experience with e-bike systems from brands such as Bosch or Shimano
- Wheel building experience
- Experience with shop software such as Lightspeed
Schedule
Full-time, including Saturdays, with longer days in spring and summer when repairs pile up. Winter is quieter and a good time for training and builds.
What we offer
- Employee pricing on bikes, parts and gear
- Shop tools, stands and specialty equipment provided
- Paid training, including manufacturer service courses
- Paid time off
Add your pay, location and schedule when you post. Jobs that show pay get noticeably more applicants.

- A bike comes in for a flat, and you notice the brake pads are worn to the metal. What do you do?

Tips for hiring a bike mechanic
- Give finalists a paid bench test: a bike with a few planted problems, like a misadjusted derailleur and a rubbing brake. You’ll see their process and attention to detail.
- Hire before spring. Good mechanics are hardest to find once the weather warms up and every shop is busy.
- Community bike co-ops and cycling clubs are full of people who wrench for fun and may be ready to do it for work.
- Say in the post whether mechanics also sell. Some enjoy the sales floor, and others only want to work at the stand.
