Convenience Store Clerk job description template

Convenience store clerks run the register, check IDs for age-restricted sales, stock coolers and shelves, keep the store clean and handle fuel or lottery sales where you offer them. They often work alone, so the best posts are clear about late or overnight shifts, solo coverage and the safety steps you have in place.

Convenience Store Clerk

Part-time
Your Company is hiring a convenience store clerk to keep our store stocked, clean and welcoming. You’ll ring up sales, check IDs for tobacco and alcohol purchases, stock coolers and shelves, and keep the coffee station, restrooms and counter clean. Many of our regulars stop in every day, so a friendly manner goes a long way. We’ll train you on our register and procedures. If you’re dependable, honest and comfortable working on your own, apply today.

What you’ll do

  • Ring up sales, fuel prepays and lottery tickets, and take cash, card and mobile payments
  • Check ID for every tobacco, vape and alcohol sale, and refuse any sale that doesn’t meet the age limit
  • Stock coolers, shelves and the walk-in, rotating products so older stock sells first
  • Brew coffee, fill the hot food case and log hot-holding times and temperatures
  • Clean restrooms, floors, the counter and the fuel island from a shift checklist
  • Check in vendor deliveries against invoices and report shortages to the manager
  • Follow our cash-handling and safety steps, including safe drops and drawer counts at shift change

What we’re looking for

  • Comfortable handling cash and making change accurately
  • Able to work alone and stay calm with difficult customers
  • Able to stand for a full shift and lift cases of drinks up to 40 lbs
  • Meets any minimum age our state sets for clerks who sell alcohol or tobacco
  • Willing to complete the responsible-seller training our state requires, if any

Nice to have

  • Previous cashier or convenience store experience
  • Familiarity with lottery terminals or fuel pump controls
  • Available for overnight or early-morning shifts

Schedule

Part-time, with morning, evening, overnight and weekend shifts. We post the schedule in advance and try to keep your shifts consistent from week to week.

What we offer

  • Free fountain drinks and coffee on your shift
  • Employee discount in the store
  • Paid training on our register, lottery and fuel systems
  • More hours available for clerks who want them

Add your pay, location and schedule when you post. Jobs that show pay get noticeably more applicants.

Tips for hiring a convenience store clerk

  • Walk candidates through your safety setup, such as cameras, cash limits in the drawer and what to do in a robbery. It reassures good applicants, especially for late shifts.
  • Role-play an underage buyer during the interview. Refusing a sale politely is a skill, and one mistake can bring fines or put your license at risk.
  • Ask references about cash handling and honesty. Clerks often work alone with the register and the stock.
  • Post a hiring sign at the counter and on the pumps. Many good clerks are regulars who live nearby.
