House Cleaner job description template

House cleaners clean clients' homes on recurring visits, deep cleans and move-outs, often working with a partner and driving between several homes a day. Clients trust them with keys, pets and belongings. A good post says how many homes a typical day includes, whether you supply products and transportation, and how drive time is paid.

House Cleaner

Full-time
Your Company is hiring house cleaners to make our clients' homes shine. You'll clean kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and living spaces from a detailed checklist, working on your own or with a partner and visiting a few homes each day. We provide supplies, training and steady daytime hours. Our clients trust us with their homes and pets, so we're looking for honest, careful people who take pride in a job done right.

What you’ll do

  • Clean kitchens and bathrooms thoroughly, including counters, sinks, appliance fronts, tubs and toilets
  • Dust, vacuum and mop every room, working from top to bottom so nothing gets missed
  • Follow each client's checklist and notes, including rooms to skip and products to avoid
  • Handle deep cleans and move-out cleans, such as baseboards and the insides of ovens, fridges and cabinets
  • Make beds, change linens and tidy surfaces without rearranging clients' belongings
  • Lock up, set alarms and keep client keys and door codes secure
  • Photograph and report any damage, breakage or problem in a home right away
  • Restock your supply caddy and clean your vacuum, mop heads and cloths between homes

What we’re looking for

  • Cleaning experience at home, for a business or with another cleaning service
  • Careful and thorough, and able to follow a checklist the same way every time
  • Trustworthy around clients' belongings, keys and pets
  • Able to bend, kneel, climb a step stool and carry a vacuum and supplies up stairs
  • A valid driver's license and reliable car, if the job includes driving between homes

Nice to have

  • Previous experience with a residential cleaning service
  • Comfortable around dogs and cats
  • Experience with green or fragrance-free cleaning products

Schedule

Full-time, weekdays during daytime hours, with no nights. Occasional Saturday move-out cleans are available if you want extra hours.

What we offer

  • All supplies and equipment provided
  • Mileage reimbursement for driving between homes
  • Paid training alongside an experienced cleaner
  • Tips from clients are yours to keep
  • Paid time off after your introductory period

Add your pay, location and schedule when you post. Jobs that show pay get noticeably more applicants.

House Cleaner interview questions

  1. Walk me through how you'd clean a client's kitchen from start to finish.
  2. A client's notes say not to use bleach anywhere in the house. How do you adjust your routine?
  3. You arrive at a home, the key doesn't work and the client isn't answering. What do you do?
  4. Which products are safe on granite, hardwood floors and stainless steel?
  5. A client says the last cleaning wasn't up to standard. How do you respond?
  6. How do you feel about cleaning while dogs or cats are home?
  7. How do you keep up your pace and quality when you have several homes in one day?

Tips for hiring a house cleaner

  • Do a paid trial clean, paired with your best cleaner. A wiped baseboard and a streak-free mirror tell you more than any interview answer.
  • Call past employers or clients and ask specifically about honesty and care with belongings. Your cleaners will be alone in clients' homes.
  • Check whether your cleaners should be employees rather than independent contractors. Misclassifying workers can lead to back taxes and penalties.
  • Spell out drive time, mileage and the number of homes per day in the post. These details decide whether experienced cleaners apply.
