Kennel Attendant job description template

Kennel attendants feed, walk and clean up after the dogs and cats in your care, and they notice when a pet isn't eating or acting right. At a boarding kennel or dog daycare, they may also supervise playgroups and handle check-ins. A good post says what animals you board, how much cleaning is involved and which weekend and holiday shifts are required.

Kennel Attendant

Part-time
Your Company is hiring a kennel attendant to care for the pets who stay with us. You'll feed, water and walk dogs, clean and disinfect kennels and play areas, give medications as instructed and keep an eye on every animal's health and behavior. Holidays and weekends are our busiest times. If you love animals, don't mind hard, messy work and are dependable, we'd like to meet you.

What you’ll do

  • Feed each pet on its own schedule and diet, and note how much it eats
  • Walk dogs and take them out for potty breaks and playtime
  • Clean and disinfect kennels, runs, bowls and play yards daily using our products and procedures
  • Give medications exactly as owners or the veterinarian have instructed, and log every dose
  • Watch for signs of illness, stress or injury, such as diarrhea, coughing or limping, and report them right away
  • Supervise group play, keep groups matched by size and temperament, and step in before play turns rough
  • Check pets in and out, confirm their belongings and share notes about the stay with owners
  • Wash bedding and towels and keep supplies stocked

What we’re looking for

  • Comfortable handling dogs of all sizes and reading their body language
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs, walk strong dogs on a leash and be on your feet all shift
  • Okay with cleaning up after animals and working in a loud, busy setting
  • Available weekends and holidays, our busiest times
  • Reliable and on time, since pets depend on regular feeding and walks

Nice to have

  • Experience at a kennel, dog daycare, shelter or vet clinic
  • Training in dog body language or playgroup management
  • Pet first aid and CPR certification

Schedule

Part-time, including early-morning, evening, weekend and holiday shifts. Pets need care every day, so we rotate holidays fairly across the team.

What we offer

  • Discounted boarding, daycare and grooming for your own pets
  • Paid training on animal handling and our care procedures
  • Flexible part-time hours
  • Holiday pay when you work major holidays

Add your pay, location and schedule when you post. Jobs that show pay get noticeably more applicants.

  3. A dog growls when you open its kennel door and won't come out. What do you do?
  4. How would you clean and disinfect a kennel after a dog with diarrhea?
  5. How do you make sure every pet gets the right food and medication when you're caring for dozens?

Tips for hiring a kennel attendant

  • Hold a paid working interview with your team. Watch how candidates approach nervous dogs and whether they pitch in on cleaning without being asked.
  • Hire well before the holidays and summer. Boarding peaks then, and new attendants need time to learn your routines.
  • Look for shelter volunteers, pet sitters and dog walkers. They've already shown they'll do the unglamorous parts of animal care.
  • Check whether your state or city licenses boarding facilities or sets staff training rules, and build them into onboarding.
